Brunch At Stouffer's Pier East Is A Filling Treat
By Jay Stuart
I recently had two opportunities to dine at brunch at Pier Eastthe old Stouffers Tack Room. I couldn't really see anything there that reminded me of that other restaurant. The decor from entrance on back speaks a new focus. The food is topflight and plentiful and the price reasonable. The service-what there is of it for a brunch-was quick, friendly and helpful-tho not too knowledgeable. When I inquired as to the souffle's origins, I was told that it was a 'shrimp and crab souffle' which sounded awfully good to me but not quite like what it tasted like. So I spoke to the chef and he assured me that my taste buds were not malfunctioning, that indeed, it was not a shrimp and crab souffle, but a carrot souffle, which is why it was sooo moist and light and sweet and had that good texture he was after.
That being the only problem with the brunch, let me acquaint you with some of the other goodies served there on a Sunday and give you a brief idea of the decor.
could have made a meal of, and a scrumptious desert table that I couldn't even get near on my first visit-I got too fast too full.
Sailing majestically through the deserts-fruits, cheesecake, and a couple of less-thanappetizing puddings that were definitely out of place-was a clever 3 masted schooner carved out of a 200 pound block of butter. This center piece, complete with sails, does catch the eye. I understand from the chef-who carved several ice sculptures so far in his young career-that he will be going to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. this summer tho why I am sure I cannot tell. He did explain that four years there would hone his skills and he wanted to graduate from the premier school on this side of the Atlantic. Noble ambitioncoupled with your splendid talents should take you far from your native Union Avenue address.
But to go on to the decor-the bar is very trendy with lots of wood and brass fittings. The light fixtures are quite proper-though a different globe would be an improvement. Something in a milk glass would be more fitting.
The mirrored conversation area across from the bar with the brass railing is a real sign that Stouffers is trying to update its image to the 1980's.
The food ranged from the plebian to the patrician. On the high end of the scale was the aforementioned souffle, creamed chicken over little puff pastries, gigundous ribs, fresh hot waffles that were super light, a very interesting mushroom salad composed of mushroomsThe dining area itself is biwhole-in a herb and oil and level, high ceilinged, and has for vinegar marinade, delightfully such an area, a low noise level. delicious blueberry muffins that! So far, LR has been totally underwhelmed by response received from announcements placed in the Foundation Newsletter and made at the Friday nigh Rap group. Many promises have been made, but only two songs have been submitted by one of our Lesbian/Feminist GEAR mem-

LR envisions a book of proseshort stories, essays, etc., poetry, songs, drawings and photographs. Each of you can write, draw, or take pictures, and are probably better than you think. You needn't be a professional just express your feelings.

table on the first level impart a surprising degree of privacy. I would guess that this is in part due to the type of lights-they cover the booths. (Seeing is believing!) On the opposite side of the dining room is a wall of glass-the idea is nice but who wants to dine overlooking a parking lot? It's been done already.
I had no problem dining there with boy friend and a friend-I see no reason why anyone else would either.
Summing up, the food is worthy of the price both in quantity and quality-try a little of everything and see how fast you fill up.
The redesigned interior is airy and pleasant.
Brunches are from 11:30 to 3:00; dinner is served from 5:30 on-the bar remains open till late. Reservations are recommendedjust tell 'em I sent you.
